<p>People that actually need certain drugs will receive the appropriate prescriptions from their doctors. (As far as I&#8217;m concerned, healthcare ought to be free in the US). People who think they need drugs because of the ads often go to their doctors and demand that they get a prescription for the desired drug. When their doctor refuses, they get angry, and try to convince the doctor they need this, or go to another doctor that will sign them a prescription.</p>
<p>The end result is that many people get drugs that they don&#8217;t need. They risk dangerous side effects.</p>
<p>For antibiotics, this is worse. Tens of millions of antibiotic prescriptions are written annually for the common cold &#8211; caused by viruses! This runs the risk of gettting  more antibiotic resistant bacteria! </p>
