Do we have statistics about the percentage of television viewing time that is devoted to advertising?

Wondering what percent of TV viewing time on broadcast and or cable is devoted to advertising? Does it vary widely by network?

If I’m interested in international work, am I better off specializing in objective journalism or advertising?

I’m specifically interested in working with China (I’m studying Mandarin right now) and am wondering if I’d be better off specializing in objective written journalism (newspapers, magazines, online, etc) or “strategic communication” (advertising and public relations)? Our major requires us to specialize in one… Any tips?
